Thanks for checking out my blog.
I'm a University of Michigan alum currently living in San Francisco, CA. Before making my way out to the west coast, I was living in New York City - AKA the greatest city in the world.
What I do for a living
Currently, I'm working as a software engineer at Verily Life Sciences, Alphabet's life sciences "other bets" department, on surgical robots. Before joining Verily, I was working at Google on DFP, focusing on video ad infrastructure and also full-stack work on our web app. (Shoutout to Tommy - Video Team for LYFE!).
In a previous life, I was working at BlackRock, a financial asset management firm, on their core trading platforms with a focus on distributed computing.
What I like to do
I like to write code. Most of my professional experience has been doing backend infrastructure work, but my "free-time" coding has always been keeping up with the latest open-source frontend movement.
I like music. Music has always been a huge part of my life - 12 years of classical violin, 8 years of guitar and drums. I've self-produced two albums with some friends, and my ultimate dream is to someday make a living by producing music. Check out my soundcloud.com/terranmoccasin for some of my old songs!
I like games. Being a gamer was my identity for most of my life. StarCraft (vanilla and BW), StarCraft 2, DotA, Halo 3, WoW... these were all games that profoundly changed my life (it's not lame, shut up!). I was a member of the University of Michigan StarCraft 2 Team in college, and we traveled around the country competing in national tournaments. My race was Protoss, if you're wondering. It wasn't until 2011 that I had to consciously decide to take my focus off of gaming in order to concentrate on my career.
I like billiards. To me, pool is the perfect translation of strategy video games from the digital world to the physical world. You don't need to be a gifted physical specimen to excel, and you rely on strategy and execution (think RTS games) as opposed to reflexes and teamwork (FPS / fighting games). I like strategy. I like pool.
I like basketball. I play a lot of pick-up ball, and I am a devout fan of the NBA. I hate the Knicks, I hate Carmelo Anthony, and I hope he never wins a championship. My home-team will always be the Detroit Pistons, and I currently root for the Brooklyn Nets (huge JLin fan here).
Where I want to go
I want to do something different. I'm not quite sure what that is yet, but I will continue searching. Learning new things is something that always gets me amped up, and my mission is to surround myself with people that will constantly test my beliefs, abilities, and push me to the next level. I'm usually not this intense, I swear. I'm pretty laid back - but I still firmly believe that I can do more.
